Play It Again

Playing has benefits. When kids play they develop multiple skills that benefit them in throughout life. Pretend or make believe play helps kids develop executive function or self-regulatory skills that include making plans, controlling emotions and impulses, and regulating one's own behavior. Nowadays preschoolers are spending more time in organized activities and scheduled lessons and less time in imaginative free play. This diminishes their cognitive, social, and emotional development. Play also has important roles in the development of school readiness. It encourages literacy related language skills. Learning occurs through active investigation-play. It acts as a child's "work" or job. Playing is a necessity for children, and they need adults to balance play, academics, and team activities. Play produces children who are emotionally healthy, ready for school, and eager to learn.

  1. I agree with what you wrote. When young kids play, it helped develop multiple skills that benefit them. Playing does help diminish their cognitive, social and emotional I agree with because it helps the child see how to play with others as well as what playing actually is. PLaying could also build up language skill because they are playing with other kids and maybe the children could pick up on things.

  3. I think that you made some super important points in your summary of your article. It's similar to what I said because I also put in my summary that children need play in their lives and that it is their own form of work. I like how you focus on how play affects their overall health and development. I also believe that it helps them when they are in school or doing any sort of thinking activity. We need children who are prepared for school and what ever teachers ask of them. So I like that you make it a point that play is essential in the life of a child.

  4. I like the fact that you mentioned that play encourages children to want to learn. This is important to children because they need to develop a passion for things that will help them be more active and successful later in life. I also liked how you mentioned that their play needs to not be constructed, and how it should just be them and their surroundings, encouraging creativity.
